FINANCES: The Laws That Govern Financial Prosperity

by Tawanda Mills

When recession hit the world in the latter part of 2007, many Christians did not know what to do or how to operate their faith during tough economic times. Most Christians are believing God for breakthrough in their finances, and yet they lack the wisdom to do what is needed in the natural realm. We cannot allow ourselves to be defeated because of a lack of knowledge. Unlike the world system, the Kingdom of God is never broke or in need of a stimulus package.

First and foremost, whenever we are faced with a challenge we must seek God by reading His written Word—it is our primary source. When we meditate on the Scriptures, we begin to hear His voice leading us to success (Joshua 1:8). This is the law of following the leading of the Holy Spirit. He wants to give us specific spiritual and practical instructions concerning our finances. When we follow his instructions, He will lead us to profit (Isaiah 48:17).

There are practical laws that govern prosperity. In order to experience the financial prosperity that God has destined for our lives, we must learn to apply both the spiritual and the natural aspects of acquiring wealth and getting out of financial bondage.

Here are a few practical tips to assist you in keeping your checkbook out of the red.

  1. Do not live beyond your means.
  2. Keep a log of everything you spend. Know where your money is going and make the proper adjustments.
  3. Determine where you are wasting money.
  4. Get rid of credit card debt and pay your bills on time.
  5. Do not take on unnecessary financial burdens or debts.
  6. Count the cost of the financial decisions you make.
  7. Create a reasonable budget.
  8. Always pay yourself and begin a savings plan.

Another practical law that many people do not like to discuss is the law of diligent hard work. To prosper financially, we must diligently apply ourselves to some form of income-producing activity—either a job or some type of business venture. Keep in mind that diligence gets God’s attention. It draws prosperity to us. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 13:11 that wealth is acquired little by little. Therefore we must get rid of a get rich quick mentality concerning wealth. Get-rich-quick schemes fail. The blessing of the Lord makes us truly rich and He adds no sorrow with it (Proverbs 10:22). In other words, when God causes us to prosper, it is without the burdens often tied to the wealth acquired by worldly means.

Third John 2 in the Amplified Bible says, Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in every way and [that your body] may keep well, even as [I know] your soul keeps well and prospers. God wants you to prosper in every area of your life, including your finances.  Please decide today to follow the above-mentioned tips. And remember, lasting and honest wealth comes by working hard and acquiring it little by little.
