The story of the prophet Jonah is one example of why God allows us to go through trials. God told him to go to the city of Nineveh to preach His message to the people. But Jonah refused to go and ran away. He boarded a ship going to another city, and a strong hurricane-like storm arose. The life-threatening storm caused everyone aboard to fear for their lives. All the passengers began praying, except Jonah, who was found sound asleep. The people woke him and began asking him questions. Jonah informed them that he was running from God and suggested that they throw him overboard to save their own lives.
Jonah was thrown into the deep sea, and a great fish swallowed him. While inside the fish’s belly, he experienced death and Hell. After three days and three nights, God had mercy on Jonah. God revived him, and the fish spit him out onto dry land. Again God told him to go to Nineveh. This time Jonah obeyed.
Did Jonah have to go through all of that? No. But his disobedience caused him to go through that trial. He could have simply obeyed God the first time and been spared that awful experience. Some people choose to learn things the hard way. It is important for us to examine our lives, and if we find we are disobeying God in any area, we need to make a quick turn-around.
When we disobey God, He has to correct us. Many times, He will correct us by allowing us to go through trials. It is a course of correction He uses to get us onto the right path and to keep us from experiencing ultimate ruin. As parents, we do not want to discipline our children, but we do so because we love them. We would much rather they simply obey us so we won’t have to correct them. Likewise, God wants us to obey Him, so He won’t have to correct us.
Our Heavenly Father loves us so much that He directs us even when we blatantly disobey Him. Like Jonah, when we harden our hearts and stray away, He has mercy on us and gives us another chance. And He will sometimes go to extremes to get our attention. Here are three reasons why:
God may be telling you to do basic things like love others or forgive someone who has wronged you. Whatever He is telling you to do, obey Him. Don’t run away from Him because you will only be going in the wrong direction. Learn from Jonah’s mistake and simply obey your Heavenly Father.
