Practical Steps to Debt Release

Many times, the financial situations we find ourselves in can be contributed to the decisions we make. Going into debt is a choice that can end up costing you more money in the end. Between rising interest rates and fees, choosing to borrow can become a major enemy to financial freedom and prosperity, which is why it is so important that we do everything possible to free ourselves from debt. When your money is tied up in credit card payments and loans, it becomes extremely difficult to get ahead.

In addition to the spiritual aspect of debt release, which includes standing in faith on the Scriptures, here are some practical things you can do to activate the process of debt release:

1. Gain knowledge.
   • Educate yourself about debt management, which enables you to change your thinking about spending and saving. The Law of Intelligent Debt Management, Vol. 2 is a powerful tool you can use to help you discover the power of positive confession. I encourage you to take the confessions from this book and recite them every day. In addition, there are many other books and resources at your local library or bookstore that will help in this area.  Also, remember that when you give financially, through tithes and offerings given to your local church, you position yourself for debt release.
2. Get direction.
   • Find a financial counselor to help you apply the principles you are learning about finances. A counselor will encourage you to get your credit report and help you establish a rapid debt reduction strategy and budget. You might be surprised to find areas where your spending has really spiraled out of control. Sometimes, all it takes is a small adjustment to free up additional funds, which can be used toward paying off your bills.
3. Stay focused.
   • As you commit to getting out of debt, you will strengthen yourself by remaining focused. Write down your goals and put them in a visible location, such as your refrigerator, and look at them every day. Keeping your goals in the front of your mind really helps when you feel the pressure to stray from your debt-reduction plan.
4. Expect results.
   • You must believe you will see the results of your efforts to become debt-free. Once you pay off that first credit card, it will only empower you to continue working toward your goals. As you apply the money used to pay off your last bill toward your next one, a snowball effect will begin to take place. Because of your commitment to financial freedom, you will no longer find yourself cringing at the thought of bill collectors calling you all the time. In fact, when you check your account balance, you will be pleased with what you see.
