When it comes to maintaining your health, an often overlooked variable in the health equation is sleep. While it is critical to eat right, exercise, and drink plenty of water, getting the proper amount of sleep is just as critical. In fact, not getting enough rest can cause serious repercussions on your body and mind. Because of this, it is important to adjust your lifestyle to accommodate the amount of sleep your body needs.
One of the primary reasons you need sleep is because it helps your body repair itself. During this time, your body repairs the damage caused by stress, toxins, and other harmful exposures encountered throughout the day. Not only that, but while you sleep, your cells also regenerate themselves. You would be amazed at all the activity going on in your body while you are asleep.
There are several other benefits of sleeping, including the fact that it helps reduce internal issues such as inflammation. An increase in stress hormones produces inflammatory responses in the body, which create an environment for heart-related issues, diabetes, and cancer.
It’s important to pay attention to what your body is telling you in order to discern if sleep deprivation is an issue for you. Extreme fatigue can cause you to be less alert. It can become difficult to remember things, and you won’t feel refreshed and energized when you are chronically deprived of sleep. In addition, your immune system will not be able to function at its peak level, which can lead to getting sick more often.
So, how can you improve your sleep habits when you recognize you haven’t been taking care of yourself in this area? The first step is to identify things that could be affecting the quality of your sleep. Exercising an hour (or less) before bedtime will hinder a quick transition into a good night’s sleep because your body is still energized from your workout. Also, caffeine and too much light in your bedroom can also hinder or disrupt your ability to get sound sleep. It is important, when you retire for the night, that your room be as quiet and as dark as possible.
If you are feeling stressed-out, it might be a good idea to do some deep-breathing or other relaxation techniques prior to going to bed. Anything you can do to unwind and get your mind off the cares of the day can help improve the quality of sleep you experience. Additionally, the type of pillow you use is also important. You do not want a pillow that forces your neck into an uncomfortable or extremely elevated position.
Taking care of ourselves involves an integrated approach that incorporates several different things. If one area is compromised, it can cause imbalance, thereby hindering our health and fitness goals. Locate the areas in which you need to make improvements, and commit to follow through. Getting more sleep could be the missing link in your personal health equation, but you can start making changes now so you can experience the full benefits of divine health every day.
