An Ounce of Prevention: The Importance of Annual Exams

by Suzanne Daniels

Getting yearly exams is an important part of maintaining good health, and should be an integral part of your health care routine. Many times, the health challenges people experience could have been prevented if they had gone to the doctor for an annual exam. Men and women have specific health concerns that can be addressed during a regular physical, which is why we should not neglect this vital aspect of preventive care.

Part of what it means to walk by faith is to do the practical, natural side of things, and let God do the rest. Sometimes Christians can become so heavenly minded that they are no earthly good, even when it comes to the things that are necessary for maintaining their health. Part of a successful health care plan involves having a primary care physician, whom you visit once a year. It is during these yearly visits that the following tests may be administered:

  • Cholesterol screening
  • Diabetes testing
  • Prostate examination
  • Pap smear
  • STD screening
  • Mammogram

It is particularly important to get regular exams if your family has a history of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, or certain types of cancers. Certain routine tests have proven to be beneficial in screening for irregularities, such as a fasting blood sugar test, liver function tests, lipid profile to check cholesterol, and urinalysis.  The pap smear and breast exam for women are also important, since early detection and diagnosis of cancer is key in increasing the chances of survival.

If your doctor discovers something that may need to be looked at further, he or she may refer you to an internal care specialist, who can provide even more specific examinations of a particular area of your body that needs attention. Sometimes we may think one area is the problem, but it could be something totally unrelated. Only a thorough exam can determine what the best course of action should be.

Some people are leery of going to the doctor simply because of fear. However, staying in the dark about your physical condition will only make things worse. Getting checked out is essential to maintaining good health. No one enjoys having their blood taken, or having to go through certain examinations, but the preventive aspect of yearly physicals is essential.

Walking in divine health involves doing the spiritual and the natural things necessary to live a long, strong life. Make yearly physical exams a part of your health care routine so that you can take a preventive stance against sickness and disease. God’s will is for us to enjoy dis-ease-free living, but we must do our part by eating properly, getting enough rest, exercising, and visiting our doctors regularly. Take control of your health today and schedule your yearly exam if you haven’t done so already.
