Saving, Planning Ahead, and Anticipating Potential Setbacks

by Creflo Dollar

The person who has a plan is the person who will be successful. When you prepare yourself ahead of time and plan exactly how you will accomplish a particular thing, you will be more likely to successfully reach your goal. It is vitally important to save, plan ahead, and anticipate potential setbacks because unexpected situations are almost a guarantee. However, if you prepare for the unexpected, you won’t always be in desperate need of a miracle.

Opening a savings account is the first step toward accumulating finances to secure your future. Savings accounts are accounts maintained by commercial banks, savings and loans associations, credit unions, and mutual savings banks. You can have a basic savings account that requires a low minimum balance, or a CD or money market account. These types of accounts usually require high minimum balances, but they have higher interest rates, which enable your money to grow faster. By using a savings account, you can put aside money that has the potential to earn a monetary return. You simply have to choose which account is best for you.

If you earn more than you spend each month, you can easily put extra money into a savings account. However, if you are in a position where you can’t put a lot of money aside, at least open a savings account and begin saving a small amount each month. Most banks offer payment deduction options that automatically transfer money from your checking account to your savings, or you can manually make deposits. Regardless of how you do it, the key is to start somewhere, even if it is just five dollars a month.

The Word of God is big on discipline, diligence, and wisdom. These three characteristics are sure-fire keys to success. In fact, every successful person I know possess these qualities. Saving money is a discipline. Investing is a discipline. Planning ahead and anticipating unexpected situations are disciplines that must be developed in your life. If you weren’t taught these principles while growing up, I understand that changing bad financial habits will require work. However, you will find that getting back on track financially is worth the work.

Many people find it difficult to commit to a savings plan and not dip into their nest egg. This will take discipline and practice. However, it is necessary in order to see financial growth and have financial security. To break old spending habits, we must be willing to change, no matter how uncomfortable it may be. Many of us have cultivated unwise spending habits, and these established patterns won’t disappear overnight.

Becoming proficient in saving money will require you to renew your mind with God’s Word on the matter. By finding out what the Bible has to say and making a quality decision to meditate on the Word, and to do it, you can become disciplined in this area of your life. The spiritual aspect of saving is evident in the Scriptures. Proverbs 6:6-8, in The Amplified Bible says,

“Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider her way, and be wise! Which, having no chief, overseer, or ruler, Provides her food in the summer, and gathers her supplies in the harvest.”

This principle of gathering is characteristic of the ant, which prepares for the coming season by stocking up on what it needs before the time comes. The Word says that when we take a lesson from this creature, and follow its ways, we are wise!

Proverbs 30:24-25 in The Amplified Bible says, “There are four things which are little on the earth, but they are exceedingly wise: The ants are a people not strong, yet they lay up their food in the summer.” The wisdom of the ant is obviously something God wants His people to take note of and emulate. When you have something to put away, you will be prepared for the future. That future could include hard times, or it could simply mean having enough for something you want to do or accomplish. Either way, it’s wise to save, plan ahead, and anticipate potential setbacks.
