What Happens When a Believer Sins?

by Creflo Dollar

When someone has a car accident, it is usually not planned or intentional. The same should be true for Believers who sin (or miss the mark). In most cases, after a car accident, the car is inspected to determine the extent of the damage and the authenticity of the accident. Likewise, when we sin, God inspects our hearts and gives us a chance to make the correction, even when the sin is intentional. God is merciful and forgiving; however, we must honestly acknowledge the sin, and forsake it so that His mercy can be released into our lives (1 John 1:7-9).

When we are involved in a car accident, our auto insurance protects us against the high cost of repairs and other expenses. Likewise, the blood of Jesus can be compared to insurance in that it also protects us from the high cost of sin, which is eternal damnation. We can have peace of mind, knowing we are covered by the precious blood of Jesus when we sin.

However, the blood of Jesus cannot be viewed as a license to sin, without consequences. Many times, we believe we can simply ask for forgiveness and keep right on sinning! However, sin brings with it a curse, and ultimately eternal death. This is why we must repent of our sins, and be willing to make a decision to change.

True repentance occurs when we mentally change our course of direction—away from the sin. When we confess, and forsake the sin, God forgives us because of the sacrifice Jesus made. Just as the blood of Abel cried out before God (Genesis 4:10, Hebrews 12:22-24), likewise, the blood of Jesus cries out, speaking on our behalf.  The blood of Abel spoke against Cain, crying out, “Vengeance, judgment, and death!” However, the blood of Jesus speaks out before God, pleading for mercy, pardon, grace, and life for the Christian who misses the mark.

God forgives and forgets (Isaiah 43:25-26).  Therefore, once we are forgiven, we should not keep reminding Him (or ourselves) of the sin we committed. We should not feel condemned or depressed about what we’ve done. God has forgotten about it, and so should we. Our emotions concerning the issue should not override what the Word of God says about His forgiveness.

This is why the blood of Jesus is so precious! It not only saves us from eternal damnation, but it also gets rid of our guilt! In other words, the blood of Jesus wipes the slate clean and gives us the right to be restored so that we can have peace again.

We can keep our slates clean by conforming to the Word of God (Romans 12:1-2, Psalm 119:1-3). His Word keeps us on the right path so we can avoid pitfalls. Never forget that God is on our side. He is not sitting back waiting for us to make a mistake so He can punish us. He sent His son to die for us because He loves us. He gave us a way out, and continues to do so through His Word. We serve a loving God. He desires to bless us, not harm us. Therefore, because of our love for Him, we should desire to live a life that pleases Him.  And we can do that by making His Word the final authority in our lives. When we do, we will seldom miss the mark.
