“When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have ordained; what is man that you take thought of him, and the son of man that you care for him? Yet you have made him a little lower than God, and you crown him with glory and majesty! You make him to rule over the works of your hands. You have put all things under his feet (Psalm 8:3-6, New American Standard Bible). The psalmist marveled at the concept that God has each one of us on His mind, though He created the entire universe. He made us a little lower than Himself. He created us in the image of Himself and gave us dominion and authority. When we think of everything God created, it is amazing how much God cherishes us. When we begin to truly understand how God views us, we will never again accept defeat.
Man’s identity began to decay when Adam and Eve yielded to sin in the Garden of Eden. Satan entered the Garden and tempted them, causing them to disobey God. Their relationship with God was broken, and they began to experience the consequence of their disobedience. They began to experience death in various forms and stages. Their destiny was eternal damnation, and their glorious identity was shattered forever.
“For those whom He foreknew [of whom He was aware and loved beforehand], He also destined from the beginning [foreordaining them] to be molded into the image of His Son [and share inwardly His likeness]” (Romans 8:29, AMP). God had a different plan for mankind! His plan included a Savior. Now our identity can be fully restored through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! When Jesus died for us, He not only reconnected us to the Father, He also gave us a new identity in Him. When we become born-again Christians, our spirits become new. Our recreated spirits are as mature and perfect as Jesus is. God sees us through His son Jesus, and all that Jesus did to make us new. We have been redeemed, restored, and delivered from the curse and eternal damnation.
Satan constantly tries to rob us of our God-given identity by making us feel worthless when we do something wrong or make a mistake. He is the accuser of the brethren. He has accused mankind since the fall of man. He attacks our identity by trying to convince us that God does not love us. When we believe God does not love us, we will act accordingly. We will feel hopeless, and have a distorted concept of who we are. This is why we must regularly look into the mirror of God’s Word. God’s Word gives us an authentic reflection of who we really are. When we read and study the Word, we gain an understanding of God’s original intent for mankind. When we understand our original purpose, Satan cannot deceive us.
Many Christians do not know who they are in Christ, and, as a result, they fail to identify with the promises in God’s Word. Our perspective of ourselves will determine our success as Christians. In order to reap from the kingdom of God, we must begin to see ourselves as He does. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, God sees us as victorious overcomers and more than conquerors. God created man in His own image, and He wants us to identify with Him and fellowship with Him. It is only through praying (communication with God), studying His Word, meditating on His Word, and obeying His Word that our true identity will be restored.
