When we see Christians practicing sexual sin, they are usually dealing with unresolved issues in their souls. The soul of a person consists of the mind, will, and emotions. When the soul of a person is suffering, sexual immorality is a byproduct. I am focusing on sexual sin here because it is so prevalent in the Church today. It is time for Believers to receive the grace God has given us. It is by grace, through faith, that we can live holy.
If we were to take a look into the souls of many promiscuous men and women in the body of Christ, we would find that there is a deeper underlying issue there, which stems from the lack of healthy affection they needed while growing up. These people usually fall into the trap of searching for love and affection in a perverted manner, which is evident in sexual immorality.
Another area of sexual immorality where Christians struggle is pornography. If we were to look into the souls of these individuals, we would find issues concerning a lack of spiritual intimacy. In other words, they are dealing with a void that only God can fill. Pornography is an unhealthy substitute for intimacy, which can only be obtained through a close relationship with God.
Adultery is another example of sexual immorality that can be found in the body of Christ. Christians who commit adultery are usually seeking intimacy in a relationship outside of marriage. Instead of establishing a healthy, emotional connection with their spouses, they find someone else to connect with.
Whatever God requires of us, He always enables us to do. Our shortcomings may be in the areas of addiction, sexual sin, or unhealthy relationships, but God, through His Word and our faith in it, gives us the ability to overcome every shortcoming we have. In order to get on the path to freedom, we have to discover the root issue we are dealing with.
Ultimately, the root of sexual immorality is a lack of fear (or reverence) for the Lord. When we truly fear the Lord, we say to ourselves, “I respect God enough to obey His Word.”
I’ve noticed that many Christians are using grace as an excuse to continue in sin. While it is true that grace is God’s unmerited love and favor toward us, grace is also the supernatural ability that enables us to live in a way that pleases Him. Therefore, grace should not be used as an excuse to live an immoral lifestyle.
Holiness is being of one mind with God. What He says is wrong, we say is wrong. Living a life of holiness will require that we make decisions that line up with His Word. Every day we face opportunities to choose God’s way of doing things or the world’s way (1 Corinthians 6:9-20, AMP). As Christians, we make the Word of God our final authority. We honor God by obeying His Word. When we trust His Word and trust His grace, we will find the strength to face our deeply-rooted issues and walk free of immorality of any kind. Once we make the decision to trust His grace, He will help us to live a life that pleases Him.
