The month of June marks the beginning of a new season and is also the month in which we celebrate Father’s Day. Fathers are instrumental in helping to shape the lives of their children and imparting the love of God into their families. We live during a time when manhood is being redefined and the roles of men and women are being reversed. Too often, women have to take on the roles and responsibilities of men because a lot of men are falling short in these areas. Many men leave their families and play no part in their children’s lives, which is not only unfortunate but extremely damaging to the children and the family structure as a whole. God has a plan for men and it is a good plan. When men begin to walk in the calling God has assigned them to walk in, our society, and ultimately our world, will change.
Most men received inaccurate information about what it means to be a man, from the time they were boys and throughout their teenage years. We are often taught that our manhood and worth lies in the number of women we can seduce and how aggressive we can be. The idea that we can never be made to look foolish puts many men on the defense and prevents them from really loving and living the way God intends. In addition, the world tells men that being a man of love, who cares about others, is somehow weak. Nothing is farther from the truth. True manhood is demonstrated in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, and He is our example. He was a servant and a leader who carried out His God-given assignment and fulfilled the will of the Father. By following Him, we can be sure that our manhood is a reflection of God’s desire for us.
Changing the world begins with us. Men, we must begin to embrace the Word of God as the benchmark for our character and conduct, rather than the norms and values of society. By doing this, we can renew our minds to God’s standard and expectations. Romans 12:2 says, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” What is God’s will for fathers and husbands? They are to lead, teach, and train their children, and love and cherish their wives. They should also be examples of God’s love and character for others and should be the spiritual priests of their households. Manhood is more than just a vague concept, it is outlined in the Word through the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.
This issue of CHANGE magazine is focused on helping men and women walk in their God-given assignments and roles. Taffi has written a powerful article on submission, and we also have articles that delve deeper into the issues of fatherhood and relationships, and how to be a good husband. We are committed to giving you the tools you need to become all that God has called you to be. The Word is the mirror that gives you that true reflection so you can apply and execute God’s instructions to you.
Taffi and I are excited about 2012 and the lives that will be impacted with the Gospel this year. We look forward to hearing your testimonies of victory and success in the days ahead. Let’s keep changing the world, one person at a time!
