One of the most destructive trends occurring in this generation is the failure by a large number of men to actively function in their roles as fathers. God created men with an innate gift and ability to be fathers, just as He is a Father. Because some men lack understanding of their purpose and the honor that comes with fatherhood, too many boys have grown up never knowing the love of a father. Their hearts are weighed down and they spend their whole lives wondering—"Where is my Dad?" Many of them are lost, angry and on the path to self-destruction. Sadly, the fatherless boy ultimately becomes a man who does not know his purpose or true identity.
The most important thing a person can obtain in life is understanding (Proverbs 4:7). Understanding is the knowledge and comprehension of the purpose and intent of a thing. Men must understand that they will "father" something into this earth through their sons and daughters. It will either be God's blessing or Satan's curse. For example, when men fail to take their parental responsibilities seriously, they pass negative mindsets, sins and bad habits down to their sons. As a result, sin and the curse is passed on from one generation to another. A father's role is to pass on a positive mindset, sound morals and values, and love. This foundation positions children to be in right-standing with God. Unless the hearts of godly fathers are turned back toward a wayward generation of lost young men, the Bible says there will be a curse in the earth (Malachi 4:6, AMP). If the biological fathers are absent, it is up to other males in their lives to mentor these boys so they can develop into responsible adults.
Just because a man makes a baby doesn't make him a father. By God's standard, a man is not a father unless he is willing to uphold, support and develop his children. Real fathers are a source that sustains. They are not missing in action dads. When a man is physically or emotionally absent from his child's life, he robs the child of the life-sustaining force that a father imparts. Consequently, a void in the life of his son or daughter, in many cases, can later be expressed in violence, emotional instability, drugs and depression.
God intended for every child's identity to be imparted by his or her father. This principle is directly shown through the life of Jesus. Before He had done any great works or miracles, God the Father spoke and imparted into Him a sense of identity and destiny. After doing so, God proudly proclaimed,"...This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased" (Matthew 3:17). Jesus' confidence and identity as a man was the foundation of His life and ministry. His destiny couldn't be stopped because of the foundation His father established in His life.
The most important thing the Father imparted into the Son was love. God has called men to love their sons and be an example of His love in their lives. Like Jesus, a boy who experiences the love of his father through example, will have the potential to live a life free from the curse of "fatherlessness."
