People often ask me how they can experience breakthrough in their lives. Everyone wants to know how to get out of bad situations and into good ones. They want to know the five steps to a miracle or the seven keys to success, but the truth is there is no quick fix for life's problems. It's the choices we make from day to day that determine where we are today. One of the choices that people often overlook that is mainly responsible for most of life's struggles is their choice of words. I've come to realize that nothing is more important than the words we speak.
Life and death are in the power of the tongue. This law governs all of life, and it works the same for everyone, whether you are saved or not. What's so dangerous is that many people, through ignorance or neglect, destroy their own lives with their words. People are destroyed because of what they don't know. It is ignorance and a lack of understanding about the power of words that keeps people in defeat.
For example, a man who's been unemployed and desperately needs a job but seems to have no success in getting one has most likely been defeated by his words. He has spent a considerable amount of time talking about how hard it is to find a job and the tough job market, then complains and wonders why his situation isn't changing. His own words have solidified and supported the present circumstance of joblessness. This kind of situation usually goes from bad to worse unless there is a change made in the words spoken concerning the problem.
One of the biggest reasons why people don't take words seriously is because we don't always see the consequences of what we say immediately. We must understand that words can be compared to seeds planted in the ground. They may not come to life overnight, but they will grow.
Jesus said that every idle and unproductive word we speak will be judged and have consequences (Matthew 12:36). Idle words are words spoken and not believed. We often say things we don't mean. For instance, I hear people say, "I almost died laughing." Did they really almost die? Of course not, but they said so. You may be saying, "But, Brother Dollar, it's just an expression!" But I'm here to tell you that Heaven is recording every word you and I speak.
There is a reason why Jesus could speak to a fig tree and see the results of what He said twenty-four hours later. There is also a reason why God could speak the worlds into creation and see immediate results—He believed what He said. Sadly, most people believe the negative things they say about themselves more than they do their positive faith confessions, so the positive words they speak have no effect.
In my research of the Bible, I have found that the Hebrew word "dabar," when translated, means both words and things. The Bible says God saw every thing that He made (Genesis 1:31). Well, how did He make those things? He spoke them into existence. The entire first chapter of Genesis is a record of God speaking things that appeared in the natural world as a result of what He said. Words are things. It's important to understand that when you speak words, you are also speaking things.
If you want to see new things in your life, make a decision to speak those things God has said in His Word. Change your self-image and your life by believing the good things God has said about you. Don't deceive your heart— say what you truly believe. Once you take your words seriously, positive confessions will become your way of life, and you'll have the power to change your circumstances for the better.
